Physician Profile Databases
To find out about your physician, another physician, or even yourself try these:
- ABIM - The American Board of Internal Medicine
keeps an updated database on the Board Certification status of internal medicine doctors in the United States.
This is the site for verifying that a doctor is Board Certified in his/her internal medicine sub-specialty.
- ABMS -
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is the umbrella organization for the 24 approved medical specialty
boards in the United States. Established in 1933, the ABMS serves to coordinate the activities of its Member
Boards and to provide information to the public, the government, the profession and its Members concerning issues
involving specialization and certification in medicine. The mission of the ABMS is to maintain and improve the
quality of medical care in the United States by assisting the Member Boards in their efforts to develop and utilize
professional and educational standards for the evaluation and certification of physician specialists.
- AMA Physician Select - The American Medical Association
supports this database which allows public access to a doctor's credentials including medical school education and
residency training. There is also limited information about Board Certification.
- California Medical Board - Per Business and Professions
Code sections 803.1 and 2027, effective January 1, 1998, new information on hospital disciplinary reports, malpractice
judgments and arbitration awards has been added. Please note that hospital disciplinary actions reported are limited to
those which resulted in the termination or revocation of a physician’s hospital staff privileges for a medical disciplinary
cause or reason, and date back to January 1, 1995. Malpractice judgments and arbitration awards of $30,000 or
greater are reported for dates back to January 1, 1993. Information on malpractice judgments or arbitration awards
of less than $30,000 is not available for periods prior to January 1, 1998.
- Florida Malpractice Claims - For determining
what malpractice claims have been paid out by a Florida physician.
- Florida Medical Board - For verifying
a physician's license to practice medicine in the state of Florida.
- Georgia Medical Board - For verifying
a physician's license to practice medicine in the state of Georgia as well as seeing if there are any complaints (public board
orders) substantiated against this physician.
- Health Care Report Cards - to find out about a
hospital's performance. This is also free.
- Massachusetts Medical Board - For verifying
a physician's license to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts.
- NPDB - The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and Healthcare
Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB) are managed by the Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Division of Quality Assurance (DQA). HRSA is an agency of the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
